Well West Park Academy what a fantastic year of sport it has been!
Way back in September we set ourselves the target of becoming a Gold Award school through the school games after last year becoming a Bronze Award School in only 10 weeks. We are extremely delighted and proud to report that not only did we achieve this target but we were the FIRST school in Ashfield to receive the accolade on Monday 17th June. This award highlights the great steps we have taken as a school to ensure our pupils engage regularly in physical activity, both in PE and at extra-curricular activities. Along with demonstrating our dedication in providing opportunities for pupils to access competitive sport in school and at local competitions.
We have had so many successes this year and it is only right to give all of the pupils and the staff involved a huge thank you. I will start off these success stories by mentioning our greatest achievement to date, this happened on Tuesday 9th July when our girls Cricket Team finished second at the County Finals. This achievement means that our school has the SECOND BEST CRICKET TEAM IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, a county which has nearly 280 primary schools!! A phenomenal achievement indeed. The challenge has now been set to become county champions next year, go for it girls!!

The memories and the self-belief that these successes will have brought is exactly why sport is so important to our pupil’s young lives.
Along with the successes of our teams we are equally proud of the following achievements:
Qualified and competed at 6 district finals
Qualified to compete at the Ashfield Primary School Games
Finished 2nd for the British Primary Dodgeball Award

Provided opportunities for over 130 pupils to represent our Academy
All pupils in KS2 have engaged in PE on a regular weekly basis.
As I am sure lots of you aware I will be leaving at the end of the term to take up another PE Specialist position in Ashfield. I will be sad to leave and will certainly miss the pupils of The West Park Academy. However, still working in the area will enable me to see lots of the pupils at events and to ensure they are still enjoying playing sport. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff for their support over the year, the brilliant support from parents and most importantly the pupils – they have embraced the past year and I am extremely proud of the progress the pupils have made and more importantly the enjoyment that PE and Sport has brought to their lives.
A big thank you to those of you which joined us last week for our Foundation Sports Day and School Games Day, it means the world to the children to have you there!
All the best
Mr T Darby
